Players, Game, and Court
- 3 on 3 Basketball is a half court game played by 2 teams of 3 players each including a maximum of 1 substitute.
- A team needs at least 2 players to start a game. If a team does not meet these requirements their game will be declared a forfeit.
- Coin toss: Winner gets first possession.
- The referee must handle the ball before it is put into play. This includes out of bounds or after a foul.
- The ball must be passed to a teammate to start the game, after a score, violation, or after a foul is awarded.
- The ball must be “taken back” (entire body and ball behind the arc at the top of the key) on each change of possession to the “check line”. The “check line” shall be at the top of the arc. Failure to “take it back” will result in loss of possession and points taken away if the basket is made.
- On defensive rebounds or steals the ball must be returned to the “check line” and the player in possession of the ball may maintain control and attempt to score.
- An “out of bounds” ball will be taken out at the “check line”. Out of bounds will include the back of the backboard and all parts of the support structure.
- Deliberate stalling (no shots for 30 seconds) or attempts to freeze the ball shall result in loss of ball possession. The referee may issue a verbal warning before taking away possession.
- There will be no jump balls. Possession after a held-ball situation will be awarded in an alternating fashion.
- A basket will count for 1 point and a shot behind the arc will count for 2 points. (high school gym only)
Game Time, Timeouts, and Substitutions
- Teams will play up to 12 points or until 14 minutes are over, whichever comes first. In the case that 12 points are not scored in 14 minutes, the team with the highest points at that time will be declared the winner.
- If at the end of the 14 minutes the teams are tied, the next team to score wins.
- Time outs can only be called by the referee for injury or rule discussion.
- Substitutions may be made after a basket, a foul shot or any stoppage of play. The substitute must get the officials attention and wait to be called in.
Fouls
- Age Divisions: 14-18 and OPEN: Players must call their own fouls at the time of the infraction. A referee will be present, but only as a mediator and as the official scorekeeper.
- Age Divisions: 9 and U, 10-11, and 12-13, will have a referee present to call all fouls.
- All fouls will be counted against a team total. On and after the 5th team foul, a bonus shall be awarded for the remainder of the game. An individual cannot foul out of a game, but may be ejected by the official for cause.
- Prior to the 5th team foul:
- Any common foul shall result in loss of possession for the offending team.
- Any offensive foul shall result in disallowing a converted basket and loss of possession.
- Any shooting foul with a missed basket shall result in a retained possession.
- Any shooting foul with a converted basket shall result in the basket being awarded and a change of possession.
- On and after the 5th team foul:
- Any common foul shall result in a single foul shot along with retained possession for the offended team.
- Any offensive foul shall result in disallowing a converted basket and awarding a single foul shot along with retaining possession for the offended team.
- Any shooting foul with a missed basket shall result in 1 foul shots along with retaining possession.
